What Are Stick Electrodes?
Welding electrodes are metal wires with baked on chemical coatings. The rod is used to sustain the welding arc and to provide the filler metal required for the joint to be welded. The coating protects the metal from damage, stabilizes the arc, and improves the weld. The diameter of the wire, less the coating, determines the size of the welding rod. This is expressed in fractions of an inch such as 3/32", 1/8", or 5/32." The smaller the diameter means it requires less current and it deposits a smaller amount of filler metal.
These are a pound (1lb) of 14" Mild steel Stick Electrodes with 1/8" DiameterE8018-B2R AWS Classification
Lincoln Electric® E8018-B2 H4R Excalibur® 8018-B2 MR® Stick Electrode with 1/8" Dia is designed for all-position welding of 1.25% chromium, 0.5% molybdenum low alloy steels. Electrode measuring 14" is capable of exceeding AWS minimum requirement of 550 MPa (80 ksi) tensile strength after 8 hrs of stress-relieving at 690 deg C (1275 deg F). It features square coating burn-off, a smooth arc, excellent strike and re-strike capabilities, self-peeling slag and extremely low spatter levels make Excalibur® the industry's premium brand of low hydrogen electrodes. These are applicable in all welding positions except vertical down and are recommended for pressure vessels, process piping, power generation and petrochemical. For a low alloy, low hydrogen electrode with industry-leading arc performance and operability choose Excalibur® 8018-B2 MR.
