What Are Stick Electrodes?
Welding electrodes are metal wires with baked on chemical coatings. The rod is used to sustain the welding arc and to provide the filler metal required for the joint to be welded. The coating protects the metal from damage, stabilizes the arc, and improves the weld. The diameter of the wire, less the coating, determines the size of the welding rod. This is expressed in fractions of an inch such as 3/32", 1/8", or 5/32." The smaller the diameter means it requires less current and it deposits a smaller amount of filler metal.
These are a pound (1lb) of 14" Mild Steel Stick Electrodes with 1/8" Diameter, E7018 AWS Classification
Lincoln Electric® Excalibur® 7018-1 MR® Carbon Steel Stick Electrode measuring 1/8" ideally designed for welding on steels with marginal weldability has square coating burn-off with magnificent arc performance to provide strong welds. It has comfortable slag removal characteristics with minimal spatter to increase operability and clean weld surface renders easy arc control. It has square coating burn-off for magnificent arc performance. Stick electrode has incredible impact toughness examined to -46 deg C. It renders a splendid clean weld puddle, uniform slag follow and magnificent wash-in without undercutting. It has easy strike and re-strike properties that complies with AWS A5.1/A5.1M, 2004 ASME SFA-A5.1 and ABS CWB/CSA W48-06 standards. It can be used with mild steel, process piping and pressure vessels, fill and cap pass welding of up to X65 grade, pipe power generation and petrochemical applications.
Applications
- All position welding of mild steels, and some high strength, low alloy steels
- Use on steels with poor weldability, such as high sulfur and high silicon steels
- Welding of piping, fittings, and tie ins in the petrochemical and power generation industries
- Power generation
- Petrochemical
- Pressure vessel
- Pressure piping
- Fill and cap pass welding of up to X65 grade pipe
